"My Brother is Very Special" by Amy Glorioso May
When Amy's son, Reed, was diagnosed at the age of three with Apraxia of Speech, she searched high and low for information. She stumbled upon an amazing website; www.apraxia-KIDS.org. She gained a wealth of knowledge through their resources, as well as compassion and support through their online community. She no longer felt alone.
Something was missing, though. Many parents in the online community had voiced their concerns over the lack of materials that existed for these children. Their youngsters were starting school or joining neighborhood playgroups. Parents were searching for tools to help educate their children's peers, and weren't having any luck in doing so. There was a need being left unfilled.
With the encouragement of her husband and the inspiration of her children, Amy wrote her very first book, "My Brother is Very Special," in 2004, when her son, Reed, was five. Eight months later, the book was available to not only the Apraxia of Speech online community, but our entire community at large. From Alaska to Australia and Illinois to Isreal, the book has found its way around the globe, reaching speech-challenged children and those who love and care for them.
