A Children's Book Written Specifically for Speech-Challenged Children

Do You Know a Child With Speech Delays?

Perhaps your son or daughter has been recently diagnosed with an expressive or receptive speech delay, a developmental speech delay, or Childhood Apraxia of Speech.  Maybe you're a therapist or a teacher who works with speech-impaired children. You might be a friend or relative who watches a young one struggle with learning to talk.  However a speech-challenged child fits into your life, you have most likely been effected by the frustration that child has in trying to communicate with the world around him.

This story is about a little boy, Reed, who is very different than most little children. Reed has a severe speech disorder which leaves him almost completely unintelligible to his peers. The story is told from the viewpoint of his older sister, as she is well aware of his challenges and triumphs. Instead of exclusively focusing on what Reed is unable to do, this story portrays the many things he can do with his peers despite his inability to speak to them.

"My Brother is Very Special" gently teaches young children about acceptance in a way that they can developmentally understand. By reading this story to young children, we encourage them to ask questions about differences they see in others. Although the main character in this book has a speech disorder, it is written in a way that makes it universal. With developmentally appropriate text and bright, whimsical illustrations, "My Brother is Very Special" is perfect for all young children.
